Plague column of Trenčin
The plague column is known mainly for
Cruel wars, natural disasters, times of crop failure or starvation have resulted in large-scale epidemics in many Slovak cities.
In the summer of 1710, the city of Trenčín did not escape the mass plague.
It is a sad period during which more than 1,000 people died, and this is what reminds us of the Plague Pillar of the Holy Trinity in the city center.
The plague pillar was built in 1712 by Count Mikuláš Ilešházi.
The column most likely comes from the workshop of Viennese stonemasons, who were working in Trenčín at the time to reconstruct the Jesuit church.
In the middle of the pedestal under the coat of arms is the text:
EXCELLENTISSIMUS AC ILLUSTRISSIMUS DOMINUS COMES,
DOMINUS DIVUS NICOLAUS ILLESHAZY DE ILLESHAZA
THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES,
SUPREMUS COMES SACRAE AC ACTUALISSIMUS CONSILIARII
HUNGARIAE AULAE CONSILLIARIUS
And this means in translation:
,, The noblest and brightest lord,
the famous Count Mikuláš Ilešházi,
regular heir of the family administration over the Stolica Trenčín and Stolica Liptovská,
Supreme Councilor of the Imperial-Royal Majesty
and the Chief Chancellor of the Kingdom of Hungary. "
